Alternative Cancer Care

The word cancer falls heavy on our hearts. It has affected each of us, directly or indirectly, whether it is a family member, friend, colleague, or neighbor. Increasingly Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies are used together with medical interventions to improve overall well-being for those living with cancer.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that has been practiced for more than 3,000 years in China. It is a holistic system of traditional Asian medicine that is based on what we call vital life energy (Qi). Holistic health is based on the interconnectedness between the mind, body and spirit. Acupuncture is one of several modalities that are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture works by regulating the flow of Qi in the body (creating movement), and thus stimulating the nervous system and causing the release of neurochemicals such as Serotonin and dopamine. This result is creating homeostasis in the body and thus promoting physical and emotional well-being.

A Body in Harmony

In Chinese Medicine, the balance of Qi is essential to health and harmony in the body. When qi (energy) is blocked or stagnated in any way, the body’s lines of communication (meridians) are weakened and disease or pain may result. By removing these blockage(s), the flow of qi is restored and it is then that the body is able to heal itself.”

Acupuncture is a powerful modality in settling energetic disturbances and returning the body to a state of calm and peace. Acupuncture has been found to be even more effective when used in conjunction with other treatment modalities such as massage, cognitive behavioral therapy and medication if needed.
